Meet PNG’s Next Sprint Sensation…

Pais Wisil is Papua New Guinea’s rising sprint star, breaking national records and competing on the international stage. With an incredible work ethic and a growing media presence, Pais is set to become one of the most recognized athletes from PNG, having already garnered both national and international media exposure with coverage in The Courier Newspaper, The National Newspaper, EMTV, NBC, 7Plus and other various sporting organisation media.

At the Qld Championships in March 2025, Pais was given the opportunity to race an Invitational 100m. He made the moment count, with a blistering start, holding off one of Australia’s fastest sprinters until the very end, smashing the PNG National Record in 10.24. This race was the perfect preparation for the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing, in March. Pais became the first ever Pacific Island athlete to qualify for the semi-final at a World Championships event, setting a new PNG National Record for the 60m Indoor of 6.66.

Pais now holds the National Records for 60m Indoor, 60m Short Track (outdoor) and the 100m.

Pais is not just a promising sprinter — he is the future of Pacific Athletics. With the right support, he has the potential to make history for PNG on the global stage. As he continues to break records and chase his Olympic dream, now is the perfect time to invest in an athlete whose story embodies resilience, determination, and the spirit of the Pacific.

This sponsorship proposal presents a unique opportunity for your brand to partner with an elite athlete and gain exposure across PNG and Oceania.

about pais wisil

The Story So Far…

Born and raised in Jiwaka Province, PNG, Pais grew up in a close-knit family where laughter, adventure, and sport were part of everyday life. The youngest of five, he spent his childhood fishing in the river, playing rugby with friends, and decorating the Christmas tree at church. It was only in his early teenage years that he began to grasp the scale of his family’s athletic legacy—most notably, his sister Toea Wisil, the legendary “Sprint Queen of the Pacific”.

Toea’s accomplishments inspired him, but Pais was determined to carve his own path. At 15, he moved to Goroka for school, and soon after, he found his passion for sprinting. Under the guidance of local coach Samu Sasama (deceased), he trained tirelessly, earning his first international appearance at the 2022 Oceania Championships. The experience fueled his hunger for success.

Fast forward to 2024, and Pais made a bold move to Australia to pursue professional coaching and regular competition. Under the mentorship of Tony Fairweather, the same coach who guided his sister to international success, Pais has transformed into a formidable competitor.

A quiet and humble athlete, Pais lets his performances speak for themselves. His role model remains his sister, Toea, whose kindness and determination he admires deeply. On the track, he draws inspiration from Christian Coleman, modeling his explosive start after the American sprint star while refining his full-race execution.
